Rotary to Mexico 2010

Welcome to the 2010 Edition of the Rotary to Mexico Project. The Rotary Clubs of Edson, Grande Prairie, Grande Prairie Sunrise and Grande Prairie Swan City have again joined forces for this project to Mazatlan. This year we are taking 4 fire trucks, 1 ambulance and a handi bus with a wheel chair lift. The ambulance is being provided by the Rotary Club of Edson. It was donated by the Jasper Fire Department. The Town of Hinton Fire Department has also donated a Jaws of Life to the project. The ambulance is destined for a town south of Mazatlan that currently uses pick up trucks to transport the sick and injured. The Jaws of Life will be going to the Bomberos Vetranos Mazatlan to serve the entire region for rescue services. The region is thought to have a population of 700,000 people, and this will be the first Jaws of Life. They currently use tow trucks and hand tools to extricate people from motor vehicle collisions.

The vehicles are driven from Alberta to Mazatlan by a team of volunteer Rotarians from Grande Prairie and Edson with 2 drivers per vehicle. It takes about 1 week to make the trip to Mazatlan. Once there, the vehicles are provided to the communities. The group will depart Canada on March 5, 2010.

This project has a dramatic impact on the quality of life of people in the Mazatlan region. The Rotary Club extends its sincere appreciation to the Municipality of Jasper and the Town of Hinton for their contributions to the project.

So follow our adventures from Grande Prairie to Mazatlan including our social visits at the US border and Mexican border. We look forward to meeting our Mazatlan Rotarian amigos in Nogales.
